PE

At Ewell Grove, we are an active school dedicated to inspiring all children to embrace healthy lifestyles. Our engaging, challenging, and fun-filled sports and activities keep children physically active for sustained periods. We pride ourselves on creating an inclusive environment where Physical Education (PE) is adaptable and enjoyable, allowing every child to thrive and enhance their physical abilities.

Our progressive curriculum is thoughtfully sequenced to ensure a clear progression of skills, interwoven through dance, gymnastics, athletics, team sports, outdoor adventure, and swimming. From the very beginning, we focus on developing fundamental skills such as balance, agility, coordination, and core strength. By encouraging larger muscle movements, we lay a solid foundation for fine motor control and hand-eye coordination, which are the key skills that support early literacy development.

Children gain a secure understanding of how their bodies function and learn the vital role exercise plays in overall health and well-being. Our core sports values of friendship, equality, respect, determination, courage, and excellence are embedded throughout the curriculum and form our whole school ethos. Through a variety of extracurricular sports activities and competitive events with local schools and across the Lumen Learning Trust, we promote not only physical development but also positive mental well-being. These experiences encourage teamwork and leadership skills, bringing joy and a sense of achievement to our children.

At Ewell Grove, we adopt a model, practice, apply approach that emphasises the Characteristics of Effective Learning. Children engage in play and exploration through open-ended activities as well as feeling motivated to take risks and embrace new challenges in an environment that encourages creativity and critical thinking.

Our inspirational sports coach collaborates closely with teachers and teaching assistants to meet the diverse needs of our children through adapted group teaching. We provide targeted support to reduce barriers within our Physifun sessions, ensuring a flexible approach that supports individual needs. Fundamental movement skills are developed through dance, gymnastics, personal challenges, and team games.

In competitive games, children work collaboratively, applying principles of attack and defence while ensuring our sports values of teamwork and social interaction. Each year culminates in the Ewell Grove Games, a celebration that includes every child and showcases their achievements while promoting the significance of leading active lifestyles. In Key Stage 2, children have the opportunity to apply foundational skills during outdoor adventure experiences. Swimming lessons begin in Year 4, allowing children to practice and refine fundamental skills, ensuring they leave Ewell Grove as competent swimmers.

Children at Ewell Grove develop a strong sense of belonging and community through teamwork, competition, inclusive whole-school events, and the celebration of their achievements. Events like the Ewell Grove Games instil a rich sense of tradition and community spirit. Every child is empowered to achieve and excel, regardless of their starting point.

Throughout their time at Ewell Grove, children consolidate a range of skills, including performance evaluations and personal best comparisons. Independence, confidence, and resilience flourish as children learn to overcome challenges and recognise their successes in various physical activities. They gain a deep understanding of the importance of exercise and health, fostering lifelong fitness habits closely linked to personal, social, and emotional well-being. We ensure that every child leaves Ewell Grove with lasting memories, essential skills, and values that prepare them for future endeavours, setting them on a path toward a healthy and active life.
