Computing

Computing is essential for preparing children to navigate a rapidly evolving, technology-driven world. At Ewell Grove we deliver an inclusive curriculum that equips pupils with the computational thinking, creativity, and technical confidence to become active, responsible, and articulate digital citizens.

Our curriculum is built around three core strands:

1. Computer Science: Understanding digital systems, applying logic, writing algorithms, and mastering programming and debugging.

2. Information Technology: Using digital tools and software to create, organise, store, manipulate, and present content effectively.

3. Digital Literacy & Online Safety: Navigating the digital world safely, respectfully, and critically, recognising both the opportunities and risks of emerging technologies.

We use the Purple Mash scheme of work from the EYFS and through Key Stage 2 to deliver a clear, progressive curriculum where prior knowledge is systematically built upon. Computing is taught in explicit weekly sessions. Teachers set structured tasks ("2Dos") via Purple Mash, enabling pupils to access their work seamlessly both in class and at home.

Key vocabulary (e.g., algorithm, variable, selection, repetition, digital footprint, network) is explicitly taught and revisited in every unit. Computing skills are also integrated across the curriculum, from presenting scientific data and constructing graphs to writing reports and conducting safe web research.

Online safety is fundamental to pupil well-being and forms a central pillar of our safeguarding framework. Delivered through both Computing and PSHE, our safety curriculum combines Purple Mash’s ‘How2BeSafe’ units with bespoke learning organisers that are continuously adapted to address contextual safeguarding and emerging risks.

In addition:

• Teachers share and review child-friendly Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) with their classes.

• Essential habits—such as password security, data protection, digital footprint awareness, and respectful online communication—are reinforced in every lesson involving technology.

• Parent workshops are organised throughout the year to ensure key messages are communicated. Information is also shared regularly in our weekly newsletter to strengthen the link between digital safety at school and at home. 

The impact of our Computing curriculum is continuously monitored through formative and summative assessments, pupil voice, learning walks, and work scrutiny of online portfolios within Purple Mash.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at Ewell Grove will be:

• Confident & Competent Programmers: Versed in fundamental Computer Science concepts (input, output, sequence, selection, repetition, variables) and resilient when debugging code.

• Proficient Users of Technology: Able to select and combine diverse software (spreadsheets, databases, presentation tools, and graphics packages) to achieve specific goals and present work effectively.

• Responsible Digital Citizens: Aware of online safety, privacy, and digital well-being; equipped to evaluate online content critically, recognise cyberbullying, and report concerns with confidence.
