Maths

Mathematics is an engaging and fun subject. At Ewell Grove, our goal is to help every child build their confidence and skills in order to prepare them for the future. We emphasise a curriculum that enables the children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, developing conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

We aim for children to appreciate the relevance of mathematics in daily life and its significance in modern Britain. Our teaching approach integrates mathematical skills across various subjects. An understanding of mathematics is regarded as an essential tool for making sense of the world around us.  Children need to be able to apply the mathematics they know in a diverse range of situations and contexts with increasing fluency.

Children will be encouraged to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, identifying relationships and making connections in order to demonstrate their understanding or proof of a solution to a problem.  It is through the application of their mathematical skills that children will be motivated and enthused to develop their mathematical thinking.

In EYFS and KS1, we focus on developing children’s understanding of the five principles of number and place value as outlined in our calculation policy. They will gain competence in the four basic operations (+, -, ×, ÷) through a variety of practical activities. As they grow in confidence, children will learn to recognise and use number bonds, doubles, and halves, which will enhance their efficiency in calculations. We will explore inverse relationships between operations, which serve as a valuable tool for checking calculations and understanding related facts. Children will also be introduced to comparative measures and vocabulary for mass, length, time, and capacity before transitioning to standard units. Furthermore, they will use shape and pattern to investigate the world around them and engage in the exploration of properties through hands-on practical experiences.

In KS2, we will build upon the use of practical apparatus to deepen and consolidate our understanding of concepts such as place value, fractions, and calculations. Their understanding of place value will be essential for performing calculations that involve exchanges and decimals. The children will transition from practical work to formal written methods for addition, subtraction, long multiplication, and division. The foundational work on algebra initiated in EYFS and KS1 will continue to be developed. Children will learn to use standard measures with increasing accuracy for mass, length, time, and capacity, ensuring a comprehensive mathematical education. By engaging with mathematics in a meaningful way, we aim to cultivate a generation of confident, capable learners who can apply their skills in a variety of contexts.
