DT

At Ewell Grove, our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum inspires pupils to become innovative, creative, and critical thinkers. Using the Kapow Primary scheme of work, we deliver an engaging and hands-on curriculum. Pupils learn to design, make, and evaluate products that solve real-world problems while considering user needs, aesthetics, and functionality.

Learning is structured around five core, interconnected strands:

Design: Generating, developing, and communicating ideas through discussion, annotated sketches and prototypes.

Make: Safely selecting and using a wide variety of tools, equipment, and materials with accuracy.

Evaluate: Analysing existing products and testing personal designs against clear success criteria to refine their work.

Technical Knowledge: Applying scientific, mathematical, and computing concepts to structures, mechanisms, electrical circuits, and digital control.

Cooking & Nutrition: Learning essential culinary skills, understanding balanced diets, and discovering food provenance and seasonality.

Knowledge is systematically revisited, building confidence and technical competence year-on-year. DT is taught through focused lessons and independent learning opportunities, reflecting our inclusive, hands-on and adaptive approach. The children develop life skills and resilience through trial and error, developing practical capability, constructive critique, and an awareness of design in the wider world. 

We believe that talking like a real designer, engineer, or chef is a huge part of loving Design and Technology! Using the Kapow Primary scheme, we help children to use accurate, exciting technical words. By building their DT vocabulary, children learn to share their ideas clearly, solve problems together, and explain how their creations actually work.
